"I will tell the people what's going on at the statehouse. I'm going to treat the capitol as a borderline crime scene. ... If businesses don't have to pay taxes, the burden should not be on those trying to feed themselves." - The Valley Falls Vindicator & Oskaloosa Independent, March 3, 2016.

Across Kansas the top 1% are looting and on-the-loose, pitting us against each other. Communities in Jefferson County need to democratically prepare themselves for food and energy autonomy.

SOME THINGS WE CAN’T GET OVER

Rod Haxton, ctnewsonline.com

A Kansas publisher was gleefully taking a victory lap following the state Supreme Court’s decision not to overturn gerrymandered redistricting maps that favor Republicans.

The ultra-conservative writer decided to also use the opportunity to take a swipe at the George Soros-funded media, Black Lives Matter, transgender athletes, the invasion of immigrants at our southern border and the general demise of this nation thanks to the influence of liberal propaganda.

The problems we are facing in Kansas and across this nation demand a higher level of intellectual discourse.

That reality struck again this week when 19 school children were gunned down by an 18-year-old who had access to assault weapons. We should be accustomed to it by now after Columbine High School, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the list goes on and on.

I know. We should just get over it. Read more here.

ModerationSideBar.jpg

Political moderates are not tied

to a single ideology or ideological extremes in making public policy; they prefer making progress through incremental adjustments rather than radical change. Political moderates are willing to listen to diverse points of view

and solve problems through compromise or finding

middle ground.

THE ATROCITY OF AMERICAN GUN CULTURE

Jelani Cobb, newyorker.com

Ten years ago, in the aftermath of the horror in Newtown, Connecticut—where a twenty-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and fatally shot twenty children and six adults—Wayne LaPierre, the C.E.O. of the National Rifle Association, said, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” The idea of vigilant protectors subduing armed antagonists spoke to a vision of a society in which firearms are as commonplace as cell phones, and where more guns mean more safety. If the idea seemed absurd then, the passage of time has only made it empirically so. Read more here.

SUPREME COURT MAY SOON LOOSEN GUN LAWS AS NATION REELS FROM MASSACRES

Ariane de Vogue, abc17news.com

WHY SIGNIFICANT GUN RESTRICTIONS ARE UNLIKELY IN CONGRESS

Michael Schnell, thehill.com

If there’s one thing members of both parties agree on it is this: Congress is unlikely to pass significant gun control legislation, even after two shocking mass shootings in Buffalo, N.Y. and Uvalde, Texas, that targeted Black people and children. Read more here.

WHY DO WE LET CHILDREN BUY FIREARMS?

Ruth Marcus, washingtonpost.com

Why do we let children buy guns? They can’t purchase alcohol or cigarettes in this country until age 21. But deadly weapons? Read more here.
